Quick Answer

  • Learn first the device you expect to repair most. The core skills are shared (electronics, a multimeter method, soldering and diagnosis), so you can add the other trade later.
  • Laptops have larger parts and a wider range of faults, including software; phones have smaller parts, more screens and charging ports, and more work under magnification.
  • IMT Computers teaches both as separate 12-week courses in Ikeja, Lagos, and compares them in one place.

If you cannot decide between phone repair and laptop repair, start with the device you expect to repair most, because the core skills are shared and you can add the other trade later. Both begin with electronics and a measuring method, both lead to soldering and board-level work, and both are about finding the fault before replacing a part.

What phone repair and laptop repair have in common

  • Basic electronics and using a multimeter

  • A diagnosis method: symptoms, cheapest checks first, then deeper tests

  • Safe disassembly and anti-static handling

  • Soldering, and in time board-level (component-level) repair

  • Dealing with customers: explaining the fault, testing before handover and keeping a record

How they differ

Laptop repair

Parts are larger and easier to handle, which makes the first repairs less fiddly. The faults are more varied: power and charging (see laptop not charging: causes and how technicians find the fault), displays, cooling and overheating, storage, BIOS and boot problems, operating systems and malware, so software skills matter as much as hardware skills. Upgrades such as RAM and SSDs are also part of the work.

Phone repair

Parts are small and tightly packed, so you work under magnification and need patience with flex cables and connectors. Screens, batteries and charging ports make up a large share of the work (see phone not charging: causes and how a technician finds the fault), followed by software faults, flashing and water damage. Board-level repair uses the same ideas as on laptops, on much smaller components.

A simple way to choose

  • Choose laptop repair first if you want a wide range of work, you are comfortable with software as well as hardware, and you prefer larger parts to start with.

  • Choose phone repair first if the devices around you are mostly phones, you enjoy fine work, and you want to learn screens, charging and software flashing early.

  • Choose a specialisation if you already repair devices: chip-level laptop repair or MacBook repair.

Do you need to learn both?

Not at the start. Most technicians begin with one, repair enough devices to be confident, and add the other. The second is quicker to learn because the electronics, tools and diagnosis method are already familiar.

What the first weeks of each course cover

The two IMT Computers courses start differently, which may help you decide.

  • Laptop Technician Repair: week 1 basic electricity and electronics; week 2 AC/DC, power supply and how power flows in a laptop; week 3 laptop components, disassembly and assembly; week 4 RAM, storage and BIOS.

  • Mobile Phone Technician: week 1 introduction to phone repair, tools, safety and phone components; week 2 components and their functions; week 3 displays and hardware repair; week 4 SMD components and component identification.

How IMT Computers teaches them

Laptop & Phone Repair Training offers four 3-month courses. The Laptop Technician Repair course starts from basic electricity and electronics in week 1 and ends with a final practical examination in which you repair a laptop. The Mobile Phone Technician course starts from tools, workshop safety and phone components and ends with a practical assessment on a faulty phone. Two specialist courses follow for technicians who want to go deeper: MacBook repair and laptop board-level repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is easier to learn, phone repair or laptop repair?

Laptop parts are larger, so the first repairs are easier to handle. Phone repair asks for finer work. Neither is quick to master: confidence comes from repairing many faulty devices.

Can I learn both at the same time?

You can take both courses, but most people find it easier to finish one and then add the other, because the shared skills carry over.

How long are the courses?

Each IMT Computers repair course runs for 3 months (12 weeks) and ends with a final practical assessment.

How much do the courses cost?

Fees differ between schools and between intakes. IMT Computers does not publish a flat rate: register and the admissions team will confirm your fee within 24 hours. Whichever school you choose, ask what the fee includes.
