Quick Answer

  • A phone repair technician replaces and repairs phone parts (screens, batteries, charging ports, cameras, speakers), fixes software faults and, at a higher level, repairs the motherboard by soldering.
  • Learn in this order: tools and safety, phone components, displays, electronic components and ICs, power and charging, soldering, fault diagnosis, then software repair.
  • IMT Computers teaches this path in a 12-week, hands-on Mobile Phone Technician course in Ikeja, Lagos.

To become a phone repair technician in Nigeria, start with the parts and the tools, learn how power and charging work, practise screen and charging-port replacement, then move on to soldering and software repair. Phones are small and unforgiving: steady hands, good light and a method for finding the fault matter more than expensive equipment.

What does a phone repair technician do?

  • Replaces screens (LCD and OLED), batteries, charging ports and the charging flex

  • Replaces cameras, speakers, microphones and buttons

  • Fixes software faults: boot loops, hanging phones and failed updates, by flashing firmware or doing a factory reset

  • Inspects and cleans water-damaged phones and removes corrosion

  • At board level, replaces small surface-mount components by soldering

The skills to learn, in order

1. Tools, safety and phone anatomy

Learn the parts of a phone and what each one does: battery, antennas, microphones, speakers, cameras, the vibration motor, flex cables and connectors, the power button and the charging flex or sub-board. Most beginner damage is torn flex cables and bent connectors, so practise opening and closing phones gently.

2. Displays and screen replacement

Know the common display types (LCD and the OLED family), how a touchscreen works, and the faults you will meet: cracked glass, lines, dead touch, backlight and connector problems. Replace screens on real phones until it is routine.

3. Electronic components

Phone motherboards are covered in small surface-mount (SMD) parts: resistors, capacitors, coils, diodes, transistors and MOSFETs. Learn to recognise them, read the symbols and test them with a multimeter.

4. ICs and motherboard layout

Learn the main chips and what they do: the power IC, the charging and USB circuits, the processor, flash memory (NAND, eMMC, eMCP and UFS), the network and Wi-Fi sections and the audio chips. Knowing which section a symptom belongs to is half of diagnosis.

5. Power and charging

Learn how the battery, charging port and charging circuit work together, and how to test them. No-charging and slow-charging faults are among the most common jobs: see phone not charging: causes and how a technician finds the fault.

6. Soldering and board-level repair

Soldering is what separates changing parts from repairing the board. Practise with a soldering iron and a hot-air station on dead boards first: removing and refitting components, replacing SMD parts, and repairing a damaged track with a jumper wire.

7. Fault diagnosis

Dead phones, restarting phones, no display, dead touch, no sound, camera and network faults, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth problems, USB faults. Learn a method: measure the battery and charging voltages, look for short circuits, and trace the fault to a section before you replace anything.

8. Software repair

Android troubleshooting, firmware and ROMs, flashing, boot and boot-loop problems, factory reset and recovery, drivers and the Android Debug Bridge (ADB).

9. Water damage and advanced faults

Learn to inspect for liquid damage, remove corrosion and clean the board, then trace the faults it caused, including network and radio-section problems.

Tools you need to start

  • Precision screwdrivers and plastic opening picks and pry tools

  • Fine tweezers

  • A digital multimeter

  • Magnification (a good magnifier, later a microscope) and bright, steady light

  • An anti-static mat

  • A soldering iron and, when you reach board-level work, a hot-air station

  • A few good-quality cables and a charger you can trust, for testing

How long does it take, and should you take a course?

Screen and battery replacement can be learned quickly. Board-level repair, firmware and water-damage work take longer, because each needs practice on many different faulty phones. The Mobile Phone Technician course at IMT Computers is a 12-week course that follows the order above, and its final week is a practical assessment: diagnose a faulty phone, find the defective component, replace it, repair a charging fault, troubleshoot software, then reassemble, test and document the repair.

Choosing where to train matters as much as deciding to train. How to choose a phone and laptop repair school in Lagos lists what to check.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know electronics before I start?

Not before you start. IMT Computers' Mobile Phone Technician course begins with tools, workshop safety, basic electrical concepts and phone components in week 1.

Is soldering necessary to repair phones?

You can replace screens, batteries and charging ports without it, but soldering is how you repair the board itself. In the Mobile Phone Technician course it is taught in week 8, after you can identify the components.

How much does phone repair training cost?

Fees differ between schools and between intakes. IMT Computers does not publish a flat rate: register and the admissions team will confirm your fee within 24 hours. Whichever school you choose, ask what the fee includes.

Will I get a certificate?

Yes. Each IMT Computers course ends with a certificate of completion that has a QR code and its own web link, and anyone can check it on the Verify a Certificate page. It does not expire.
