Quick Answer

  • There is no single SIWES duration. Each institution and programme sets its own, usually somewhere between three and twelve months, and some programmes use about 12 weeks.
  • Your SIWES coordinator or your department's SIWES handbook gives the exact period and dates for you. Confirm them before you accept a placement.
  • IMT Computers places students for 3 or 6 months in Ikeja, Lagos: the 3-month placement is a Front-End or Back-End track and the 6-month placement follows the Full-Stack bootcamp curriculum.

There is no single SIWES duration. How long yours lasts is set by your institution and your programme, and it is usually between three and twelve months. Some programmes use about 12 weeks. Your SIWES coordinator or your department's SIWES handbook gives the exact period for you, and that is the figure your placement must cover.

What decides your SIWES duration

  • Your institution: universities, polytechnics and colleges of education each set their own rules, and so do individual schools.

  • Your programme: a Computer Science student and an Engineering student in the same school can have different periods.

  • The number of placements: some programmes have more than one, for example a shorter one after the National Diploma and a longer one after the Higher National Diploma.

  • The timing: the placement may be a block at the end of a session, during a long break, or a full session out of school.

How to confirm your SIWES period

  1. Ask your SIWES coordinator for the number of weeks or months, and for the start and end dates for your set.

  2. Check the SIWES handbook or your institution's portal, where the guidelines are usually published.

  3. Count it against your logbook: a logbook is organised in weeks, so the number of weeks tells you how long you must work.

  4. Get the dates agreed in writing with the placement provider before you accept.

Mistakes that cost students time

  • Accepting a placement shorter than your institution requires, then discovering the logbook is incomplete

  • Starting late, so the placement ends after your department's deadline

  • Waiting until the last week to look for a placement, when the better ones have already been filled

Read the difference between SIWES and IT if your department uses both words, so you do not mix up two sets of dates.

How to use the time well

Whatever the length, a placement goes better when you plan it in stages. For a 3-month placement, a simple plan is:

  • Month 1: settle in, learn the tools and the way the team works, and start the logbook on day one.

  • Month 2: take on real tasks and a first project, and keep the weekly entries up to date.

  • Month 3: finish and present your project, draft your report from the logbook, and ask your supervisor for the evaluation.

On a 6-month placement the same stages run twice as long: spend the first two months on the foundations, the middle months on larger projects, and keep the last month for your report, your supervisor evaluation and your defence. Writing the report in the final week is the commonest regret, so draft a chapter every month.

How IMT Computers' 3-month and 6-month placements fit

IMT Computers' SIWES placement in Lagos is built for both common lengths. Students on a 3-month placement choose the Front-End track (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React.js and Tailwind CSS) or the Back-End track (PHP, SQL, Laravel and REST APIs), each with Search Engine Optimization. Students on a 6-month placement follow the Complete Full-Stack Development and Search Engine Optimization Bootcamp curriculum. Classes run three times a week, with a Live Online Class option for students who live far from Ikeja. Tell us the length your institution requires when you register, and your track is confirmed with your supervisor in week one.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many weeks is SIWES?

It depends on your institution. Some use about 12 weeks (roughly three months); others use six months or twelve months. Check with your SIWES coordinator.

Is SIWES one year?

It can be, for some programmes, and for others it is much shorter. There is no single rule that applies to every student, so follow your own institution's guidelines.

Can I do 3 months if my school requires 6?

No. Do the full period your institution requires. If it requires six months, choose a placement that covers six months.

What if I miss some weeks of my placement?

Tell your supervisor and your SIWES coordinator as soon as it happens. Most institutions expect the full period to be completed, so you may have to make up the time. Ask your coordinator what the rule is at your school.

When should I start looking for a placement?

As soon as your department announces the SIWES period, because good placements fill up. Compare options in where to do SIWES in Lagos, check whether SIWES students get paid before you decide, and see how to apply and get your acceptance letter.
