Quick Answer
- Check that you will repair real faulty devices, that the curriculum teaches diagnosis and not only part swapping, and that soldering and a final practical assessment are included.
- Visit the workshop, ask for the class schedule in writing, and ask how the certificate can be verified.
- IMT Computers' repair courses are 12-week, hands-on courses in Ikeja, Lagos with a final practical assessment and a certificate anyone can verify online.
Before you pay for repair training in Lagos, check eight things: how much of the course is practical, whether the curriculum teaches diagnosis, whether soldering is included, how you are assessed, what the workshop looks like, when classes hold, whether the certificate can be verified, and what the fee includes. A school that answers all eight clearly and in writing is usually one you can trust.
1. How much of the course is practical?
Repair is a hands-on trade. Ask how many hours you will spend working on real devices, how many students share each bench, and whether the devices are really faulty. A course that is mostly slides will not make you a technician.
2. Does the curriculum teach diagnosis?
Anyone can learn to swap a screen. The skill customers pay for is finding the real fault. Look for weeks on fault diagnosis by symptom, on measuring with a multimeter, and on telling hardware faults from software faults. Ask to see the week-by-week curriculum. A school that cannot show one is not planning its course.
3. Is soldering and board-level repair included?
Part swapping stops at the board. Soldering, desoldering and component replacement let you repair what others throw away. Check whether soldering is taught, in which week, and whether you practise on real boards. Our guide to chip-level laptop repair explains what that level of work involves.
4. How are you assessed?
Ask what you must do to finish. A final practical assessment, where you diagnose and repair a device, document it and hand it back working, shows that you can do the work. Attendance alone does not.
5. What is the workshop like?
Visit before you pay. Look at the benches, the tools, the devices you will repair and the number of students in the room, and ask who teaches.
6. When do classes hold?
Get the class days, the hours and the length of the course in writing, and check that they fit your life. IMT Computers' repair courses run for 3 months, and the class days are listed on Laptop & Phone Repair Training.
7. Can the certificate be verified?
A certificate is worth what an employer or customer can confirm. Ask how someone can check it. IMT Computers certificates carry a QR code and their own web link, can be checked on our Verify a Certificate page, and do not expire.
8. What does the fee include?
Ask for the full fee, what it covers (practice devices, parts, tools, assessment, certificate) and what it does not. Be wary of any school that will not tell you until you have paid. IMT Computers does not publish a flat rate: register and the admissions team will confirm your fee within 24 hours.
Red flags
Promises of a job or a fixed income at the end: no school controls the market you will work in.
No written curriculum, or one that only lists tools and brands.
No visit to the workshop before you pay, or a reluctance to show the benches and the devices.
A certificate nobody can check.
Pressure to pay today, or a fee that changes after you have paid.
