Quick Answer
- Apple designs MacBook logic boards, the USB-C power system and the firmware differently from Windows laptops, so MacBook repair is treated as a specialisation.
- A MacBook technician needs board-level skills: schematics and boardview, tracing power rails, and micro-soldering under a microscope.
- IMT Computers teaches this in the 12-week Apple MacBook Repair Engineering course in Ikeja, Lagos.
MacBook repair is a different skill from Windows laptop repair because Apple designs its own logic boards, power and charging system and firmware, so methods that work on a Windows laptop do not always carry over. Technicians who repair MacBooks well treat it as a specialisation of its own, built on board-level skills.
What is different about a MacBook?
Architecture: the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, and Intel-based and Apple Silicon models, are built differently, so you need to know which you are holding before you diagnose it.
Power and charging: modern MacBooks charge through USB-C, so many "not charging" faults sit in the board's USB-C power circuit and ports rather than in a simple charging socket.
Firmware and recovery: faults can be in the EFI firmware as well as in macOS, and MacBooks have their own recovery modes and restore procedures.
Displays: Retina displays and their backlight circuits, cables and connectors have their own faults.
Storage and data: on many modern MacBooks the storage and memory are built into or soldered to the board, which makes data recovery and board-level skill matter more.
Faults a MacBook technician diagnoses
No power, and not charging
USB-C port faults
No display, a dim display, flickering and backlight faults
Boot failures and firmware or macOS problems
Keyboard and trackpad faults
Overheating and random shutdowns
Liquid damage and corrosion
The skills involved
Electronics and power rails: how the board powers up and how to measure it
Reading schematics and boardview and locating parts on the physical logic board
Micro-soldering under a microscope: hot-air rework, SMD parts, USB-C port and connector replacement, jumper, track and pad repair
EFI firmware restoration, recovery modes and macOS installation and troubleshooting
Storage faults, data recovery fundamentals, and backup and migration
Safe opening, ESD protection and battery isolation
Tools and workspace
Screwdrivers for the screws MacBooks use, including pentalobe bits, and plastic opening tools
An anti-static mat and wrist strap, and a way to isolate the battery before you touch the board
A digital multimeter, and a bench power supply that shows how much current the board draws
A hot-air rework station, a soldering iron, flux and fine tweezers
A microscope, because the components are tiny
Schematics and boardview software for the model you are repairing
A typical case: a MacBook that will not charge
Rule out the simple causes with a known-good USB-C charger and cable, and look inside the ports for debris and damage.
Check whether the MacBook draws any current when it is connected to a power supply, and how much.
Remove the board from the case, isolate the battery and inspect the USB-C port area under the microscope for liquid marks, corrosion and burnt parts.
Measure the charging and power lines for shorts, and compare the readings with the schematic and boardview.
Replace the failed port, MOSFET or charging component, then test charging and power-up before reassembly.
The details change from one model to the next, which is why the schematic and boardview for the exact model matter so much.
Is it for beginners?
MacBook board repair builds on electronics and soldering skills. If you are new to repair, begin with laptop technician training or learn the board work first in what is chip-level laptop repair?. If you already repair devices and want to specialise, tell the admissions team what you know and they will confirm that the MacBook course is the right one.
How the training is organised
The Apple MacBook Repair Engineering course at IMT Computers runs for 12 weeks. It moves from MacBook architecture and safe disassembly (weeks 1 and 2) through power and charging, the logic board and EFI firmware (weeks 3 to 5), displays and backlight, keyboard, trackpad and peripherals (weeks 6 and 7), micro-soldering and data and storage (weeks 8 and 9), to advanced fault diagnosis, real MacBook repair cases and a final practical (weeks 10 to 12). Classes hold on Mondays and Thursdays, 1pm to 4pm.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is MacBook repair a separate course?
MacBook logic boards and their repair methods are different enough from conventional Windows laptops that they are taught as a specialisation of their own.
Which MacBooks does the course cover?
Week 1 covers MacBook models and generations, the Air and the Pro, and the difference between Intel and Apple Silicon, and the later weeks apply this to power, logic board, display and storage faults.
Will I learn micro-soldering?
Yes. Week 8 covers microscope operation, hot-air rework, SMD and USB-C port replacement, connector replacement, and jumper, track and pad repair.
How much does the course cost?
Fees differ between schools and between intakes. IMT Computers does not publish a flat rate: register and the admissions team will confirm your fee within 24 hours. Whichever school you choose, ask what the fee includes.
