This guide is part of our Web Development training.
Quick Answer
- Web design decides how a website looks and feels: layout, typography, colour and the user's path, usually planned in a tool such as Figma.
- Web development builds it so that it works: front-end code (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) for what visitors see, and back-end code (PHP, Laravel, SQL) for data, accounts and payments.
- They overlap. IMT Computers' Website Design course covers design in Figma and then builds the design as a live website with HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
Web design is how a website looks and feels; web development is how it works. A designer plans the layout, the type and the colours and how a visitor moves through the pages. A developer writes the code that makes those pages load, respond and store information. Small projects often need one person to do both, which is why many courses teach the two together.
What web designers do
Plan the structure of a site, its pages and how visitors move between them
Choose layout, typography and colour, and make the result consistent
Draw wireframes and mockups, usually in Figma, before anything is built
Design for phones, tablets and desktops (responsive design) and for people who find the site hard to use (UI and UX)
What web developers do
Front-end developers turn designs into pages with HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and often use a framework such as React.js with Tailwind CSS.
Back-end developers build what visitors do not see: the server, the database (SQL), accounts, forms and APIs, often with PHP and Laravel.
Full-stack developers work on both sides of a project.
Where they overlap
A front-end developer implements a designer's work, so developers who understand layout and spacing build better pages and designers who understand code design pages that can actually be built. On a small project one person can do both.
Which should you learn first?
Learn web design first if you enjoy layout, colour and how a page feels, and want to design and also build simple sites. Start with the Website Design course (12 weeks).
Learn front-end development first if you want to build interfaces in code. Start with HTML, CSS & JavaScript (12 weeks), then React.js & Tailwind CSS.
Learn back-end development if you prefer logic, data and databases to visual design. Start with PHP & SQL (12 weeks).
Learn both sides with a full-stack path, such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP & SQL (24 weeks).
All of these begin at beginner level except React.js & Tailwind CSS, which expects some HTML, CSS and JavaScript. See how long web development takes to learn for timelines, and front-end vs back-end development for the choice between the two sides.
What IMT Computers teaches
The Website Design course teaches layout, typography and colour theory and wireframing in Figma, then brings the design to life with HTML, CSS and JavaScript. You publish a business landing page and your own portfolio. The development courses go deeper into code. Every course is taught in Ikeja, Lagos, in the classroom or live online, and ends with a certificate that anyone can verify. Compare them all on web development training in Lagos.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is web design easier than web development?
Neither is simply easier; they use different skills. Design asks for taste, consistency and an eye for how people use a page. Development asks for logic and patience with detail. The Website Design course starts at beginner level and does not assume that you can draw.
Can one person do both web design and web development?
Yes, especially on small projects such as a business landing page or a portfolio. Larger products usually have people who specialise.
Do I need to be good at drawing to learn web design?
No. Web design is mostly layout, spacing, type and colour, and these can be learned with practice. In Figma you arrange ready-made shapes and components rather than drawing by hand.
Is a web design course the same as a web development course?
No, but they overlap. A web design course focuses on the look and structure of pages and may end with simple HTML and CSS; a web development course focuses on code and data. Ours, Website Design, covers both the design and the build of a responsive website.
