This guide is part of our Web Development training.
Quick Answer
- In a structured, hands-on course you can learn the foundations of the web and build a real website in about 12 weeks (HTML, CSS and JavaScript).
- A single back-end or front-end specialism takes 12 to 16 weeks in class; a full-stack path, front end and back end together, takes 24 weeks.
- How long it takes you depends on your starting point and on how much you practise between classes. A course gives you skills and projects; it does not guarantee a job.
It depends on what you mean by "learn". In a structured, hands-on course you can learn the foundations of web development and build a real website in about 12 weeks. Learning one side of the stack well, the front end or the back end, takes 12 to 16 weeks in class. Learning both takes about 24 weeks. Being comfortable enough to work on real projects takes longer, and it depends mostly on how much you practise.
How long each path takes
Front-end: what visitors see
Front-end development is HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and then a framework such as React.js. At IMT Computers, HTML, CSS & JavaScript is 12 weeks and starts from zero, React.js & Tailwind CSS is another 12 weeks, and Website Design (12 weeks) adds Figma, layout and UI/UX.
Back-end: the server, database and API
Back-end development is a server-side language such as PHP, a database queried with SQL, and usually a framework such as Laravel. PHP & SQL is 12 weeks, Laravel Development is 12 weeks once you know basic PHP, and PHP, Laravel & SQL covers the whole path in 16 weeks. If you are choosing between them, read do you need PHP before Laravel?
Full-stack: both together
HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP & SQL is 24 weeks, React.js & Laravel is 16 weeks and is for students who already know JavaScript and PHP, and the Complete Full Stack Bootcamp is 24 weeks from beginner level, with career preparation at the end.
What decides how long it takes you
Where you start: someone who has never written code needs the foundations first; someone who knows HTML and CSS can start with JavaScript or a back-end language.
Time and practice: coding is learned by building. An hour of building after each class teaches more than a longer break between lessons.
Structure: following a planned curriculum with projects and feedback is usually faster than collecting random tutorials.
Projects: finishing real projects, such as an online store or a portfolio, is what turns knowing into being able.
A realistic plan for a complete beginner
There is more than one good order. This is the simplest:
Learn the foundations: HTML, CSS and JavaScript (about 12 weeks).
Choose a direction: React.js and Tailwind CSS for the front end (about 12 weeks), or PHP and SQL for the back end (about 12 weeks).
Add the other side or a framework: Laravel (about 12 weeks), so that you can build both sides of a project.
Keep building: put your projects online and keep them up to date.
If you would rather follow one planned path, the Complete Full Stack Bootcamp and HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP & SQL each take 24 weeks and begin at beginner level.
Does finishing a course make you job-ready?
A course gives you skills, real projects and a certificate. Employers and clients look at what you can show and do, so the projects matter as much as the time you spend. We do not promise jobs. The bootcamp ends with career preparation, including a portfolio.
