Quick Answer

  • To apply for SIWES you need your institution's SIWES letter, an application to the placement provider and, once you are accepted, an acceptance letter that you hand to your SIWES coordinator.
  • A good application letter is short: who you are, your course and level, the period you need, why you chose this placement and how to reach you. Attach your institution's letter.
  • IMT Computers gives SIWES students an acceptance letter. To apply, get your institution's SIWES letter and register on the placement page.

To get a SIWES placement you need three papers: the SIWES letter your institution gives you, an application letter to the placement provider, and, once they accept you, an acceptance letter that you submit to your SIWES coordinator. Names differ between schools (introduction letter, placement form, SIWES letter), so start by asking your coordinator what yours requires and by when.

The documents you need

  • Your institution's SIWES letter, also called an introduction letter or placement form, which says you are a student who needs SIWES

  • Your own application letter to the organisation (a template is below)

  • A short CV, if the organisation asks for one

  • The acceptance letter from the organisation, once you are accepted

  • The SIWES logbook from your institution, which you start filling on your first day

How to apply, step by step

  1. Ask your SIWES coordinator for the SIWES letter, the period you must cover and the deadline. See how long SIWES lasts.

  2. Choose the placements you will apply to. Where to do SIWES in Lagos and the best SIWES placement for Computer Science students explain what to look for.

  3. Send each organisation a short application letter with your institution's letter attached.

  4. Follow up politely after a few days. A reply by phone or email is often quicker than waiting.

  5. When you are accepted, ask for the acceptance letter, and check that the dates and the placement match your institution's period.

  6. Submit the acceptance letter to your SIWES coordinator and keep copies of everything.

How to write a SIWES application letter

Keep it to one page. Put these things in it, in this order:

  • Your name, institution, department and level, and how to contact you

  • The organisation's name and the person or department it goes to

  • A clear subject line, such as "Application for SIWES (industrial training) placement"

  • The period you need to cover, taken from your institution's letter

  • One specific reason why you chose this organisation, for example that you want to learn web development on real projects

  • A line saying that your institution's SIWES letter is attached

A template to adapt

This is an example of the shape. Write your own words, and change the organisation and the reason each time you apply.

[Your name], [your institution], [your department and level], [your phone number and email], [date]. To: The Manager, [organisation name and address]. Subject: Application for SIWES (industrial training) placement.

Dear Sir or Madam, I am a [level] [course] student at [institution]. My institution requires me to complete [number] months of SIWES, from [start month] to [end month]. I would like to do mine at [organisation] because [one specific reason]. I am interested in coding and building websites, and I am ready to work on real projects and to keep my logbook up to date. My institution's SIWES letter is attached. Thank you for considering my application. Yours faithfully, [your name].

What a SIWES acceptance letter says

The acceptance letter is the organisation's written confirmation that it has accepted you. It usually contains:

  • The date, and your name and institution

  • Your course, and your matric number if one is asked for

  • The start and end dates of your placement

  • The department, role or track you are placed on

  • The organisation's name, a signature and a stamp, on its letterhead

Some institutions ask for particular wording or a particular form, so ask your SIWES coordinator before you request the letter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you give an acceptance letter?

Yes. IMT Computers gives SIWES students an acceptance letter. Ask your SIWES coordinator what your institution expects the letter to say, and tell us when you register.

Can I apply without my school's SIWES letter?

Our placement requires the SIWES letter issued by your institution, so get it from your coordinator first.

When should I apply?

As soon as your department announces the SIWES period, because the better placements fill early. See the difference between SIWES and IT if your department uses both words.

Can I use the same application letter for different organisations?

Use the same shape, but change the organisation's name and your reason for choosing it each time. A letter that could have gone to anyone is the easiest to ignore.
