Quick Answer

  • You can learn the working basics of SEO in about 12 weeks if you practise on a real website every week. That is how long our SEO course runs.
  • Getting good takes longer: rankings can need more than three months to move, and search keeps changing, with AI answers (GEO and AEO) now part of it.
  • How long it takes you depends on where you start and on whether you apply what you learn. A course teaches the method; it cannot promise page one.

You can learn the working basics of SEO in about 12 weeks, as long as you practise on a real website while you learn. Reading about SEO for a month teaches less than improving one site for a month. Becoming good, and seeing your own pages rise in Google, takes longer than any course, because search engines need time to crawl and reassess pages and because the field keeps changing.

This guide shows what there is to learn, a realistic 12-week order for learning it, and what decides how long it takes you. If you want a teacher and a plan, our SEO training course in Lagos follows the same 12 weeks.

What learning SEO means

SEO, search engine optimisation, is making a website easy for search engines to find, understand and show to the people it can help. It is several skills, not one:

  • How search works: how pages are discovered, crawled, indexed and ranked, and what the person searching actually wants (search intent).

  • Keyword research: finding the words and questions people use, and choosing the ones that fit your business and are realistic to win.

  • On-page SEO: titles, headings, descriptions, page addresses, image text and copy that is written for people first.

  • Technical SEO: whether search engines can crawl and index your pages, and whether the site is fast and works on a phone.

  • Content and internal links: pages that answer a question fully, linked so that visitors and search engines can find them.

  • Authority and trust: links earned honestly, clear authorship, real business details and evidence.

  • Local SEO: your Google Business Profile, reviews and pages that serve a real local need.

  • AEO and GEO: writing so that a page can be used as a direct answer, and understood and referenced in AI-generated answers.

  • Measurement: a baseline, then clicks, impressions and positions in Google Search Console, so you know what worked.

A realistic 12-week plan

Weeks 1 to 4: foundations, research and on-page SEO

Choose one website you are allowed to change and record where it stands: pages indexed, impressions, clicks, average position. Then learn how search works, research keywords and competing pages, map one main search to each important page, and improve the titles, headings and copy of your priority pages. Write down every change you make.

Weeks 5 to 8: technical SEO, content, trust and local SEO

Audit the site for crawling, indexing, redirects, speed and mobile problems and fix them in order of impact. Plan a substantial piece of content instead of many thin ones, look at how your site earns trust and links, and, if the site serves a local area or sells products, apply the local or ecommerce checklist.

Weeks 9 to 12: AEO, GEO, AI workflows and measurement

Improve a page so that it answers a question clearly and early, review your key pages for the way AI-generated answers use facts, and build a repeatable way to use AI tools as assistants whose work you always check. Finish by comparing your baseline with where the site is now, and write down what improved, what did not and what you will do in the next 90 days.

Our SEO, GEO, AEO & AI course runs on exactly this order, one week at a time, and ends with a before-and-after case study of your own website.

Why one real website beats reading about SEO

SEO is easy to read about and hard to do, because every site has its own history, competition and problems. Working on one site from the first week to the last means each lesson lands on something real: the keyword list becomes your keyword map, the audit becomes your fix list, and the week 12 comparison shows what your work changed. It also gives you something to show other people.

We do the same on our own websites, with our students involved. The course page lists the searches where our websites show up in Google, with the date they were checked, so you can run them yourself.

Why results take longer than the course

Learning the method takes weeks. Seeing rankings move takes longer: search engines have to find and reassess your changes, and your competitors do not stand still. Page one is a good target, and never a promise. What you can control is the quality of the work and whether you measure it, which is why a baseline and a change log matter more than any single ranking.

What decides how long it takes you

  • Your starting point: someone who already writes or builds websites picks up on-page and technical SEO faster than someone starting from nothing.

  • Having a website to work on: practice on a site you are allowed to change is what turns knowing into being able.

  • Time each week: a few hours of applying each lesson beats a long gap followed by a long catch-up.

  • Checking AI output: AI tools speed up research and drafts, but you must verify what they tell you against the real data.

  • Patience with results: rankings lag behind the work, so measure progress by what you changed and what the data shows over time.

What AI changes about learning SEO

Search now includes AI-generated answers, so two newer terms matter. AEO, answer engine optimisation, is making a page give a clear answer to a question near the top, so that it suits featured snippets and direct answers. GEO, generative engine optimisation, is making key facts clear, consistent and easy to verify, so that your content is more likely to be understood and referenced in AI answers. Neither is a trick: Google's own guidance on AI features and your website points back to the same basics, which are helpful content, pages that can be crawled and indexed, and clear information.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I learn SEO in 3 months?

You can learn the working basics in about 3 months, which is the length of our SEO training course: 12 weeks of lessons, assignments and work on one real website. Becoming an expert, and seeing rankings move for your own site, takes longer.

Can I learn SEO on my own?

Yes. Much of it is free to read and the main tools, such as Google Search Console and PageSpeed Insights, are free. A structured course saves time by putting the lessons in order, giving you assignments and feedback, and making you finish a real project.

How long before my website ranks on page one?

Nobody can say honestly. It depends on your site's history, competition, authority, technical condition, content quality and how much of the work you implement, and it can take longer than three months to change. Measure what you control: the changes you made, and impressions, clicks and positions over time.

What is the difference between SEO, GEO and AEO?

SEO is making a site easy for search engines to find and understand. AEO is making a page answer a question clearly so it can be used as a direct answer. GEO is making facts clear and verifiable so that AI-generated answers can understand and reference them. The three overlap, and all of them start with helpful content on pages that can be crawled.

Do I need to pay for SEO tools?

Not to start. Google Search Console, Google Analytics, PageSpeed Insights and Google Trends are free, and free alternatives exist for most paid tools. Some professional crawlers and keyword tools need a subscription; you can use free equivalents while you learn.
